The classic holiday story returns to theaters in time for the Christmas season. Animation adds a new element to Charles Dickens' novel.

With state of the art animation, the story of Ebenezer Scrooge is given a fresh facelift in this new retelling. Jim Carrey, the star of this new version of A Christmas Carol, has the Herculean task of providing voices for four of the main characters in the story. A brief summary of the main characters will provide a general understanding to those individuals new to the story.

Ebenezer Scrooge

Mr. Scrooge serves as the main character in the movie. He is a cold, miser that only is focused on how to increase and keep his own wealth. After the death of his business partner Jacob Marley, Scrooge is visited by his ghost. Hoping to show Mr. Scrooge the error in his ways, Marley has arranged for three ghosts to visit Scrooge.

The Ghost of Christmas Past

This is the first ghost to visit Scrooge. With help from the ghost, Scrooge is able to revisit memories of his boyhood. While he experienced a youth with few financial benefits, he did find happiness in his life. Later in his teen years he met Belle, the woman that would be the love of his life. As it is revealed, she quickly became the second love of his life following his love of money.

The Ghost of Christmas Present

As his namesake, the Ghost of Christmas Present lives a fleeting existence. He possesses all of the joy and merriment of the holiday but ages quickly throughout the day. Out of all of the ghosts, the Ghost of Christmas Present expresses most clearly the important values of the holiday. He shows Scrooge that even with little money and facing hardships, there are still families and individuals that find happiness during the holidays.

The Ghost of Christmas Future

The Ghost of Christmas Future is usually the most mysterious of the three ghosts. In most visual representations of this ghost, it is silent. The ghost does not have a voice because he represents what can be in the future. It does not exist at this point and the future is always changing. This ghost shows Scrooge the end result of his misery ways if he continues to live the same way.

With the help of a few additional people throughout the movie, the story of A Christmas Carol uses the values of society to express the need to help others. Christmas is a reminder that everyday is special and everyone should continue to care of others throughout the year.

The new interpretation of A Christmas Carol may have a few surprises using the benefits of animation but the moral of the story is sure to ring true. Every day of the year is another chance to help someone in need. The best way to be rich is to share because financial wealth is only temporary. Giving when and what you can benefits others and creates a memory that is eternal.
