Battle for Terra Gets Release Date
LionsGate, Roadside Attractions Distributes Aristomenis Tsirbas Film

Roadside Attractions and LionsGate Films have set a date to release the CGI animated film Battle for Terra. The flick, which was animated by Snoot Entertainment, is getting a May 1st release in North America.
Battle for Terra stars the voices of Evan Rachel Wood, Luke Wilson, Justin Long, Amanda Peet, Chris Evans, Dennis Quaid, James Garner, Rosanna Arquette, Danny Glover, Ron Perlman, Beverley D'Angelo, David Cross and Brian Cox. It tells the story of a group of peaceful aliens whose planet is invaded by humans from a dying Earth. Aristomenis Tsirbas (The Freak) is directing the flick from a script co-written by himself and Evan Spiliotopoulos.
The movie did well on the festival circuit last year, back when it was simply entitled Terra (click the link to see Suite 101's review). It won the Silver Griffin Award at the 2008 Giffoni Film Festival; the Grand Prize for Best Animated Feature at the 2008 Ottawa International Animation Festival, and the Crystal Heart Award at the 2008 Heartland Film Festival.
"We at Roadside could not be more excited to be releasing Battle for Terra," said the company's co-president, Eric d'Arbeloff, in the press release. "Not only is it a thrilling piece of entertainment for younger audiences, its themes of tolerance and environmental awareness will resonate with viewers of all ages. Anyone interested in 3-D animation and digital artistry will be stunned."
Lionsgate is also jumping on the 3-D bandwagon – joining DreamWorks Animation's Monsters vs. Aliens, Fox's Ice Age 3 and Disney/Pixar's Up – by rendering the Battle for Terra for 3-D screens. For those with a horror of goofy-looking glasses, the film will also show in regular 2-D theatres as well.
What's Battle for Terra About?
According to the distributors, "(The film) tells the story of Senn (Justin Long) and Mala (Evan Rachel Wood), two rebellious alien teens living on the beautiful planet Terra, a place that promotes peace and tolerance, having long ago rejected war and weapons of mass destruction. But when Terra is invaded by human beings fleeing a civil war and environmental catastrophe, the planet is plunged into chaos. During the upheaval, Mala befriends an injured human pilot (Luke Wilson) and each learns the two races are not so different from one another. Together they must face the terrifying realization that in a world of limited resources, only one of their races is likely to survive."
The Battle for Terra comes to theatres on May 1st.
