It remains to be seen if DreamWorks Animation decides to make a sequel to last year's CGI animated film Bee Movie, starring Jerry Seinfeld, Renée Zellweger, Matthew Broderick, and Chris Rock. Its worldwide gross revenue while in theatres was $257.2 million, a number which rapidly becomes less impressive when you realize that the flick cost DreamWorks somewhere around $150 million to produce (that's before promotional costs).
Considering those numbers, and the ill will Seinfeld generated among the animators who worked for him, it looks highly unlikely that a Bee Movie 2 will be hitting multiplexes. However, Bee Movie may spawn a sequel if the flick miraculously finds an audience on home video. DreamWorks Animation is hoping for such a scenario, which is why they're bringing the film to DVD on March 11th.
Bee Movie On HD-DVD
Naturally, the first edition will be a bare-bones, single disc affair, with the double-dip to follow either in the summer or for the Christmas buying season. There's no word on what either the single or double-disc editions will have in the way of extras, but certainly some kind of "making of" featurette will be involved, along with the infamous "TV Juniors" that infested the airwaves in the days leading up to Bee Movie's theatrical release. And a running commentary, involving Seinfeld, Broderick and Rock, wouldn't go amiss either.
Paramount will also release Bee Movie on HD-DVD, a format that appears to be rapidly losing ground to its rival Blu-Ray. Another nail in HD-DVD's coffin was the news that Great Beard of the Galaxy Steven Spielberg (a senior executive with DreamWorks) will release his upcoming Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull on Blu-Ray.
Bee Movie DVD Artwork
After the debacle that was the Shrek the Third artwork, it's nice to see a more unified DVD cover for Bee Movie. It features the main character Barry B. Benson (Seinfeld) floating above Central Park with the Pollen Jockeys on guard behind him. It's a single image, not a hashed-together composite of random pictures, and it works.
Naturally, there's a pull-quote endorsing the flick on the bottom. This one is from Today's Gene Shalit, who can always find something nice to say about any film. "Bee Movie Gets an A," is his contribution to the DVD artwork. For the record, Bee Movie got a 52% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with many critics knocking the flick's ignorance of bee culture (for instance, the vast majority of bees are female).
