The Bee Movie international poster suffers from a terrible case of the "cutes." DreamWorks Animation movie, starring Jerry Seinfeld, opens November 2nd.
Bee Movie's trailers have been bang-on brilliant, especially the "live-action" spots that featured Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock in insect costumes, but somebody needs to fire the schmuck who's been making up the posters.
International Poster Awards scored the latest Bee Movie poster and it's obvious DreamWorks Animation's marketing department needs a stern talking-to.
It's a no-brainer that Jerry Seinfeld's character Barry B. Benson is getting top billing in this flick, but the movie doesn't acknowledge Seinfeld's presence anywhere on this poster (I can't read the fine print on the bottom). Given that Barry is an obvious stand-in for Jerry (Ah? Ah?) and, also given that Seinfeld is an internationally renowned comedian, you'd think that DreamWorks Animation would put his name front and center on this poster. Alas, they weren't thinking that hard. Bizarre.
Let's move on to the wretched tagline, and boy is she a doozy: "Born to bee wild"? "Born to bee fraggin' wild"???
Is this the best tagline Jerry Seinfeld, and a whole host of top-shelf comedy writers could come up with? I know the German market isn't noted for its sense of humour (famous German joke: "Take my wife . . . I command you!") but this falls flat worse than Bill O'Reilly at an International Marxists meeting. It's like when Disney family movies use George Thorogood's "Bad to the Bone" in the background when one of their pre-teen characters tries to act all hard-core. It's just sad.
Okay, so this poster isn't *quite* as bad as those Alvin and the Chipmunks one-sheets I've been tearing into recently. On the other hand, Bee Movie has higher expectations going into theatres than that Jason Lee film, which will probably stink worse than the turd that Alvin scarfs down in the trailer.
It's always sad to see a potentially good flick undone by a lousy promotions job (I'm looking at you, Ratatouille), and I hope that Bee Movie overcomes these less-than-stellar posters by the time it opens on November 2nd. Extra Tidbit: Here's the synopsis, rewritten by yours truly from the copy on Db: "A bee named Barry B. Benson (Jerry Seinfeld), a recent college grad, is not interested in his lone career choice: making honey. On a special trip outside the hive, Barry's life is saved by Vanessa (Renée Zellweger), a florist in New York City. As their relationship blossoms (iter's note: ha-ha), he decides to sue humanity when he realizes that humans steal and eat honey."
