Beowulf's theatrical cut is coming to DVD, and the Director's Cut will be on DVD and HD-DVD, on February 26th.

Robert Zemeckis' motion capture epic Beowulf will perform a triple-pronged assault DVD shelves on February 26th.

The animated Paramount movie, which starred the voices of Ray Winstone, Angelina Jolie and Sir Anthony Hopkins, will be simultaneously released in three versions.

Beowulf Theatrical Release, Director's Cut and Director's Cut on HD-DVD

Version #1 will be the theatrical cut, presented in anamorphic widescreen, along with English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround tracks. The only extra feature on the theatrical cut will be "A Hero's Journey: The Making of Beowulf" featurette.

Version #2 of Beowulf will be the Director's Cut (with extra blood!). It will have the same "making of" featurette as in the theatrical DVD, plus additional tidbits like a "Beasts of Burden" featurette (presumably *not* featuring a motion-captured Rolling Stones), an "Origins of Beowulf" featurette, a "Creating the Ultimate Beowulf" feaurette, and an "Art of Beowulf" featurette,

There will be additional scenes tacked into the Director's Cut with names like "Wealthow Shows Beowulf the Sundial," "Beowulf Boasts to the People of Herot," "Celebration and Seduction," "Wulfgar Greets Beowulf at the Stockade," "Beowulf's Day," "Unferth Finds the Horn," "Cain on the Barrows". There will be trailers (for upcoming flicks, presumably), and easter eggs.

Version #3: Director's Cut on HD-DVD

For those of you who with HD-DVD players, there's another Director's Cut of Beowulf for ya. That has all the juicy goodies mentioned above, plus (take a deep breath) "A Conversation with Robert Zemeckis," further featurettes on the stunts, art design, and props from the film, with names like "Lay of the Land," "Givin' Props," "Scanners, Stunts and Rigs," "Plan of Attack," "Fight Me," "Baby It’s Cold Inside."

There are a couple of extra additional scenes on the HD-DVD version ("Grendel Runs Towards Herot," "Hrothgar Awakened by Unferth," "Scylding's watch Escorts Beowulf") for your viewing pleasure. It will naturally be a high-definition transfer, with 5.1 Dolby Digital Plus, and 5.1 Dolby TrueHD tracks.

The MSRP for these Beowulf DVDs has yet to be determined.

Extra Tidbit: Crispin Glover, who voiced the role of Grendel in Beowulf, was previously known for playing George McFly in Robert Zemeckis' 1985 film Back to the Future. He didn't appear in the sequels, because Zemeckis refused to meet Glover's salary demands.

On June 28, 1987, Glover appeared on Late Night With David Letterman to promote his latest movie, River's Edge. In a move that got him banned from the show for three years, he was apparently high on recreational pharmaceuticals, wore a wig and platform shoes, unsuccessfully tried to arm-wrestle Letterman, and nearly kicked him in the head.
