Award-winning author Neil Gaiman is obviously buzzed about Laika Entertainment's upcoming adaptation of his bestselling children's book Coraline. He recently posted the teaser trailer for the flick on his blog, and it is a doozy.
There's not a lot about plot in this (it's a teaser, after all) but the viewer gets to see some robotic hands assembling a doll with buttons for eyes, one that eerily resembles the titular character. A standard voice over (don't know the actor's name, but he does a lot of this sort of work) talks about "The Nightmare Before Christmas director Henry Selick" and "acclaimed author Neil Gaiman" bringing this classic tale to the big screen.
Some images from the movie ensue, including Coraline crawling through the mysterious door into this other world.
Trust Henry Selick (James and the Giant Peach) to give this trailer a creepy vibe, which is appropriate because Coraline is a pretty creepy book to begin with (to read another Suite 101 writer's review [SPOILER ALERT] click here). However, that didn't stop it from hitting the New York Times Bestseller list, and winning the Hugo and Nebula Awards in 2002.
Definitely love the 'eye-popping' reference in the voice over, just as a needle pokes through some flesh-coloured canvas, and who can resist the tag phrase, "Some doors should never be opened"? Some delicious chills here, folks.
Coraline Stars Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher
A quick browse at the flick's cast page shows that Laika has put together an excellent voice cast for Coraline, one that emphasizes talent and industry reputation over star power.
Child star Dakota Fanning (Coraline) and Desperate Housewives diva Teri Hatcher (Coraline's Mother/The Other Mother) are above the marquée. Gaiman has given Hatcher's voice work the thumbs-up ("really good") after hearing her on a semi-animated story reel.
The rest of the cast looks pretty kick-ass, too. Keith David (Dr. Facilier in The Princess and the Frog) voices the Cat, Coraline's only ally, and Ian McShane (Tai Lung in Kung Fu Panda) takes on retired circus performer Mr. Bobo.
Dawn French (Mrs. Beaver in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe) voices Miss Spink, and comedy compadré Jennifer Saunders (The Fairy Godmother in Shrek 2) is Miss Forcible. John Hodgman (PC in Apple's "Get a Mac" series of commercials) rounds out the cast, voicing Coraline's Father/Other Father.
Some great talent here, and it's nice to see Laika stealing a page from Pixar's book when it comes to voice casting. Bruce Coulais and 80's geek rock group They Might Be Giants are doing the music for this movie.
Coraline slithers into theatres on February 6, 2009. You can check out the teaser in Youtube and Quicktime formats by clicking here.
