Disney offers a sneak peek at their upcoming Tron Legacy, a sequel to the 1982 flick. Movie stars Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner and Daft Punk is scoring.

On Friday, August 28th a horde of Fan Expo visitors crowded into Room 717 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, South Building, for a special presentation on Disney's upcoming special-FX extravaganza, Tron Legacy.

Conceived as a sequel to the 1982 cult classic starring Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner – but "you don't need to have seen the first film to appreciate this one" – co-producer Justin Springer offered the enthusiastic audience a glimpse into what they can expect from Tron Legacy.

"I've been working on this film for 3 and-a-half years," said Springer, "but that's nothing compared to the 10 years which Disney has been poised to revisit this franchise."

He said they had already finished live-action filming in Vancouver, and were now moving on to post-production.

"You can expect lots of action, tons of adventure, and some really cool stuff," Springer promised fans.

According to Springer, Disney was merely waiting for the right director, and they appear to have found him in former architect and first-time director Joseph Kosinski.

"He has a background in architecture and design," Springer said about the former ad director, "He's done visually stunning and groundbreaking commercials for Gears of War, Halo, Nike and other spots."

Springer kicked off the presentation with some artist renderings of backgrounds and images of Light Cycles, Solar Sailors, Recognizers and a new "Light runner" that features in the film.

He also showed some sequences for the disc battles in the new film: the stunt team uses a hybrid of Parkour and Capoeira to perform the sequences. Called "lou-kick," it features high kicks without the aid of wires or spring floors.

He then showed a sequence where Flynn's son Sam (played by Garrett Hedlund) enters his father's arcade and finds a secret door behind an original Tron arcade game.

Springer wrapped things up the original concept sequence that's been kicking around Cyberland since the end of July. Repeated viewings haven't dulled this sequence's power; it's a great short that immerses the viewer in the Tron world.

Fan Expo goers also got an up-close-and-personal look at a Light Cycle, similar to one used in the film (see the included images for a closer look, plus a few design pictures).

What's Tron Legacy About?

Here's the synopsis, courtesy of the good folks at Disney:

"Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), looks into his father’s disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevin’s loyal confidante (Olivia Wilde), father and son embark on a life-and-death journey across a visually-stunning cyber-universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous."

Joining Bridges, Hedlund and Wilde in the flick will be Michael Sheen, Beau Garrett, John Hurt, Serinda Swan and Bruce Boxleitner, who reprises his role as Alan Bradley. French electronica duo Daft Punk are composing the soundtrack, and original Tron writer/director Steven Lisberger returns as a producer.

Tron Legacy is coming out sometime during the "Holiday 2010."
