You've read the plot bits, you've seen the poster, now check out the trailer for Walt Disney's live-action/cel animation hybrid, Enchanted. Disney veteran Kevin Lima (Tarzan) is directing this sucker.
All I can say is: so far, so freakin' good. This trailer does what it's supposed to do: tell the viewer the plot, show a couple of gags to pull some laughs, without making you feel like you know how the movie's gonna turn out. Kudos to Disney's editing team for this one.
While we're at it, James Marsden wins the "Chewing the Furniture While Winking at the Audience Award." That said, it's hard to hold it against him: ol' Cyclops looks like he's having a ball with his fairy-tale prince role. Actually, the whole cast looks like they're having a good time with this flick, which is always a good thing.
If there's a weak spot in this trailer, I would knock the blatant "Coca-Cola" product placement. That harshed my buzz.
Here's Enchanted's plot synopsis, paraphrased from the good folks at IMDb:
"In an animated fairy tale world, a young girl named Giselle (Amy Adams) meets and falls in love with the handsome Prince Edward (Marsden), the man of her dreams. News of this romance upsets the prince's mother (Susan Sarandon), the evil Queen Narissa, who uses her black magic to send the girl hurtling out of the animated world into the one place in the universe where there is no true love: modern day Manhattan. Soon after her arrival, Giselle begins to change her views on life and love after meeting a handsome lawyer named Robert (Patrick Dempsey). Can a storybook view of romance survive in the real world?"
As you might imagine, Enchanted is sliding into Shrek territory: a lot of the film's gags resonate a lot better if you have a working knowledge of Disney's classic animated fairy tales. Notice how Sarandon's "crone" character looks virtually identical to the "evil queen" disguise from Snow White? And check out the dragon, which looks a lot like the one from Sleeping Beauty. However, credit to Disney: if you're gonna rip off older movies for fun and profit, at least it's better to rip off your own ****.
Enchanted opens in theatres on November 21st. You can check out the trailer over here.
Fun Fact: Thanks to her role as Janet Weiss in the 1975 cult hit The Rocky Horror Picture Show, countless hordes of moviegoers still call Susan Sarandon 'Slut' every Hallowe'en.
