Eric Powell Has Finished The Goon Movie Script

David Fincher, Blur Studios Adapting Dark Horse Comic

The Goon creator Eric Powell opens up about the upcoming movie, which may be directed by David Fincher and animated by Blur Studios.

Fans of the Dark horse comic The Goon got a nice surprise last July when they learned that David Fincher and Blur Studios was adapting Eric Powell's ultra-violent comic – that recently celebrated its 10th birthday – into a CGI animated film.

Now Powell admits that he's finished the script for the upcoming movie, and has sent it off to Fincher for approval.

"I just finished writing the script a few months back, and Blur is working on a lot of test stuff," Powell told Comic Book Resources. "Fincher is working on a film right now, so we're waiting for him to get some space so we can start showing some of this stuff off. I'm pretty happy with everything so far. We've just got to work to get to the next point. This is a slow, long process."

That "other film" is likely the live-action movie The Social Network, based on a script by Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing) and starring Jesse Eisenberg (Zombieland). Fincher – best known for twisted classics like Fight Club, Se7en and Zodiac – has 8 other projects on the go, including producing a remake of the 1981 animated cult classic Heavy Metal. Blur Studios is also handling the animation for that project. Fincher will direct a segment of the film, along with James Cameron (Titanic), Zack Snyder (Watchmen), current Heavy Metal publisher Kevin Eastman, and Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean).

David Fincher "Heavily Involved" With Bringing The Goon To The Silver Screen

Will Fincher be directing The Goon? Whether he's stepping behind the camera, or just helping get the film made, Powell claims that, "David's going to be heavily involved. I've worked with him and Blur quite a bit to get the screenplay together, and it's been a great experience so far."

Goon fans will be happy to hear that creator Powell is heavily involved in adapting the darkly funny tale of the zombie-stomping underworld kingpin for the big screen.

"I think it's a choice where, if you're getting a giant paycheck from a major studio to adapt your book and get Brad Pitt as the lead or whatever, then they kind of take it away from you because they've invested so much," he says. "But when you're doing something that's more about the material and less about a big event, they give you the opportunity to be more involved. And that's your choice.

"Some guys are like, 'Just give me the check and you do what you want with it.' But I've worked so long on The Goon and I'm not creating a new book every month. I'm kind of using the Mike Mignola/Jeff Smith approach where you get your book out there and maintain it. I've got a lot invested in this on character, so I wanted to be involved. And they were eager to have me involved, so it worked out very well."

The Goon is tentatively scheduled for a 2010 release,
