A little something yours truly received in the mail: the official press release for Bill Plympton's Hair High, which will debut at L.A.'s Laemmle Sunset 5 Theatre.

Bill Plympton may have made his "Gothic comedy" Hair High back in 2004, but on April 13th, it will finally get its L.A. debut at Laemmle's Sunset 5 Theatre.

Animator Plympton is best known for his Oscar-nominated shorts Your Face (1987) and Guard Dog (2005), and for animating music videos for Weird Al Yankovic ("Don't Download This Song") and Kanye West ("Heard 'Em Say"). He is also considered the first animator to draw every single frame of an animated feature film by himself.

Here's the low-down via the flick's official press release:

"Writer/Director Bill Plympton will attend the opening night of the exclusive run at the Laemmle Sunset which will also include his Oscar®-nominated short Guard Dog. Bill Plympton's fifth animated feature, the critically acclaimed Hair High, will open in Los Angeles on Friday, April 13, 2007 for an exclusive week-long run at the Laemmle Sunset 5 Theater (http://www.laemmle.com/viewmovie.php?mid=2806).

An outrageous Gothic myth from the 1950's, Hair High is the legend of a teenage couple murdered on prom night who returns as undead skeletons one year later for revenge. The film is a unique romantic high-school comedy with a zombie-horror twist.

"Hair High features an all-star cast including the voice talents of Dermot Mulroney, Sarah Silverman, David Carradine, Keith Carradine, Beverly D'Angelo, Martha Plimpton, Eric Gilliland, Ed Begley Jr., Michael Showalter, Zak Orth, Justin Long, Craig Bierko, Tom Noonan and animators Matt Groening and Don Hertzfeldt.

"Maverick independent animator Bill Plympton self-financed the film, co-produced by his friend and distant cousin, actress Martha Plimpton. Hair High features songs by Hank Bones and Maureen McElheron. Produced, written and directed by Bill Plympton, the film is also the first animated feature to be completely drawn (30,000 drawings) live on the internet via webcam–the Plympton Ani-Cam.

"The film had its world premiere at the Slamdance Film Festival, enjoyed a very successful run on the film festival circuit, and received celebratory reviews during its New York screening before finally opening in Los Angeles.

"I'm so excited to release my new animated feature in L.A., the capital of the animation world. After receiving the Winsor McCay award earlier this month at the Annies, so many people asked me when they could finally see Hair High," says Plympton referring to the Annie Awards, the animation equivalent of the Oscars. "So, I'm very pleased to present the long-awaited L.A. premiere of my film."

"Bill Plympton will be in attendance for the opening night of the L.A. run to introduce the film and do personal drawings for the fans. Hair High will play at the LAEMMLE SUNSET 5 THEATER (8000 Sunset Blvd in West Hollywood, CA) from April 13th to April 19th, 2007."

So there you have it, folks. If you're living in the L.A. area you can go check out Hair High. If you aren't, then I'm sure you can hunt it up at your local independent video emporium.

Those who have seen Hair High gave it an overall 6.5/10 rating on IMDb.
