Check out the funny teaser trailer for Igor, the upcoming flick from Exodus Film Group and The Weinstein Company. Movie hits theatres September 19th.

At long last, The Exodus Film Group and The Weinstein Company have unleashed a teaser trailer for their upcoming animated film Igor, starring the voices of John Cusack, Eddie Izzard, John Cleese and Steve Buscemi.

The good folks at Yahoo snagged the spot (clocking in at 2:30), and it definitely brings the funny. Gotta love the rival scientists who don't slap each other during their all-out argument, but instead pound on the poor Igor in the middle. And "I had bats in my belfry;" that's a new metaphor for heeding a call of nature.

Leonids' Igor has Tim Burton vibe

In an animated film scene that's littered with cutesy talking animals and fractured fairy tales, it's nice to see a flick that doesn't instantly try to emulate last season's big hit. Okay, so director Anthony Leondis (Lilo and Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch) and writer Chris McKenna (American Dad) are shamelessly lifting Igor's vibe from Tim Burton's stop-motion classics like The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride, plus more than a little bit of Mel Brooks' legendary comedy Young Frankenstein.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, and certainly several of the character designs show a lot of imagination and fun, especially Buscemi's bad-tempered cat and Sean Hayes' excitable ambulatory brain. Thankfully, despite the fact that Cusack's Igor looks a lot like Quasimodo from Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame, no one in this flick is tempted to break into song.

Based on what Exodus and Weinstein have shown audiences so far, Igor has some potential to be a good time at the movies.

The first question of course remains whether this teaser is a mere taste of things to come, or whether the editors packed all the best ideas into the teaser, and have nothing left for the full trailer (let alone the movie). The other concern is whether Leondis and his editors can resist the urge to give us the entire flick in the next trailer, but that's a worry for a later time.

So what's Igor about?

Here's the film's synopsis, courtesy of Exodus's web site:

"Igor is a playfully irreverent comedy that brings a new twist to the classic monster genre. In a world filled with Mad Scientists and Evil Inventions, one talented evil scientist's hunch-backed lab assistant has big dreams of becoming a Mad Scientist himself and winning the annual Evil Science Fair.

"The stellar voice cast includes Steve Buscemi, John Cleese, Jennifer Coolidge, John Cusack, Arsenio Hall, Sean Hayes, Eddie Izzard, Jay Leno, James Lipton, Molly Shannon, and Christian Slater."

Not sure about the "stellar voice cast" bit in the synopsis. Buscemi, Cleese, Cusack, and Izzard are certainly bullet-proof, and Hayes looks like he'll do a good job. But Arsenio Hall and James Lipton (Inside the Actors' Studio)? Yeesh.

You can see the teaser trailer by clicking here. Igor opens in theatres September 19th.

Fun Fact: Will Izzard's Dr. Schadenfreude character order some Penne a l'Arrabiata at some point in the movie?
