Peter Sohn Directs Disney/Pixar's Partly CloudyShort Will Accompany Pete Docter, Bob Peterson's Up in TheatresMar 12, 2009 Dominic von Riedemann
Peter Sohn's short Partly Cloudy will accompany Pete Docter and Bob Peterson's movie Up into theatres. Disney/Pixar film opens May 29th.
By now everyone knows that Pixar's next feature length flick will be Up, brought to you by Pete Docter and Bob Peterson, the folks who unleashed A Bug's Life and Monsters Inc. on a helpless public (not really: those were really great films, but it sounds good, don't it?). Given Pixar's near flawless track record to date – and some positive early reviews – there's an excellent chance that Up will be a great time at the movies. But what about the short that usually precedes any Pixar film when it hits the silver screen? Well, the latest example of what Walt Disney Animation Studios' creative chief John Lasseter calls "over-delivering" is the short, Partly Cloudy. This CGI animated short will join Up when it makes its theatrical debut. The good folks at Upcoming Pixar scored an official synopsis of the short, plus an example of the concept art. Partly Cloudy Directed by Peter Sohn Here's the synopsis: "Everyone knows that the stork delivers babies, but where do the storks get the babies from? The answer lies up in the stratosphere, where cloud people sculpt babies from clouds and bring them to life. Gus, a lonely and insecure grey cloud, is a master at creating ‘dangerous’ babies. Crocodiles, porcupines, rams and more—Gus’s beloved creations are works of art, but more than a handful for his loyal delivery stork partner, Peck. "As Gus’s creations become more and more rambunctious, Peck’s job gets harder and harder. How will Peck manage to handle both his hazardous cargo and his friend’s fiery temperament?" Partly Cloudy is directed by Peter Sohn, who's best known for voicing the role of chubby rat Emile in Brad Bird's 2007 film Ratatouille. He's a longstanding member of the Pixar animation gang, having contributed animation and art design to Finding Nemo (2003), The Incredibles (2004), Ratatouille and the 2006 short "One Man Band," which played before Cars in theatres. Before joining Pixar, he worked with Bird on the highly underrated Warner Bros. film Iron Giant, and with the Farrelly brothers on the not-so-underrated Osmosis Jones. Kevin Reher, who was the casting director for WALL-E, Ratatouille, Cars, The Incredibles and Finding Nemo, acts as producer for the short. He previously produced 1998's A Bug's Life and Disney Channel/Warner Television's Gumby the Movie. In addition to all that, he was the production controller for 1995's Toy Story and the production accountant on The Nightmare Before Christmas. Up, accompanied by Partly Cloudy, hits theatres on May 29th.
