Simpsons producer Al Jean says a Simpsons Movie 2 would only happen "if we had a script that we thought was great." But the final decision may not be his.
Even before The Simpsons Movie ended, America’s favourite animated family was riffing on the possibility of a second installment.
During the credits, Lisa Simpson excitedly said, “It looks like Maggie has something to say!” Mother Marge upped the ante when she exclaimed, “Oh my God! Her first word!”
Maggie's First Word is Sequel
That’s when Maggie pulled out her pacifier and uttered, “Sequel?”
Not only that, in the premiere episode of The Simpsons’ 19th season, Bart is depicted during the opening credits writing, “I will not wait 20 years to make another movie” on the blackboard.
Does this mean that there will be a sequel to the movie that is being called the most successful TV-to-silver-screen adaptation of all time, and the sixth highest grossing flick of 2007? Will the fact that The Simpsons Movie is currently on route to making $500 million worldwide make Fox executives clamour for another installment?
Producer Al Jean is taking the moral high ground when discussing the possibility of a Simpsons Movie 2.
"We would only do a sequel if we believed it was a movie that had to be made, just like we did with the first one,” Jean told the New York Post. “We wouldn’t want to do it just because the first one was successful, or because we wanted to make money off of a movie. We’d only do it if we had a script that we thought was great (and) there’s no script at this point.”
Of course, as Peter Sciretta at /Film wryly observed, “I’m sure they can find a (great) script when Fox offers to double everyone’s salary for a sequel.”
Future Depends on Other Fox Animation
This also depends on how Fox’s next movies fare. Early indications are looking fairly dismal for this Christmas’ Alvin and the Chipmunks, and the jury is still out on Horton Hears a Who, starring the voices of Jim Carrey and Steve Carell. If both those movies tank, Twentieth Century Fox may “encourage” Simpsons creator Matt Groening and the rest of Gracie Film crew to look harder for that great script.
Fun Fact 1: Evelyn Kanter at Adventure Travel wrote an article about the new Ride With the Simpsons theme park attraction that will be opening in the Spring of 2008 at the two Universal Studios parks in Hollywood and Orlando.
Fun Fact 2: Despite Marge’s statement in The Simpsons Movie that “Sequel?” was Maggie’s first word, it wasn’t the first time the littlest Simpson spoke onscreen. Maggie’s first time was when she spoke “Daddy” at the very end of the 4th Season episode “Lisa’s First Word" (Episode #69), which originally aired on December 3, 1992. Legendary actor Elizabeth Taylor voiced the role of Maggie for that single line. Afterwards, producers vowed that Maggie would never speak again.
“Lisa’s First Word” also featured the classic Bart Simpson line: “Can’t sleep, clown will eat me” which later became the title to an Alice Cooper song.

i think a great idea for a sequel would be if Russ Cargail came back to
Springfield to get Revenge, so Springfield, and the president and his side
go to war with Springfield and all over tries to destroy the Simpson Family
something like that
I think a good script for the sequel wud be if sideshow bob and Mr burns
form an alliance 2 try and kill the simpson family and make bob the new
mayor of springfield and half way through the film mr smithers and bobs
brothers comes to the simpsons rescue and help 2 destroy mr burns and
sideshow bob and there wud b a epic fight at the end with the simpson
family fight aganist mr burns and sideshow bob bart and lisa against bob
and home and marge aginst mr buurns and the rest of the town is fighting
killer robost all across sprinfield with mr smithers and sideshow bobs
brother leading the attack and the movie ends with maggie saving the day by
pressing a big read button and starting a nuclear reaction which will kill
all the robots after president ric flair gets a helicopter 2 get all the
citzens out of springfield and the simpson are safe when they find mr buns
neuclear hideaway and mr burns gets away in an escape pod and sideshow bob
gets arrested and put back in jail

It would be awesome for another sequel and a great idea would be if the
simpsons have a huge vacation a month after their encounter with Russ
Cragail and during their flight they have to make a crash landing in the
middle of nowhere and they have an adventure from then on.

I love the simpsons. They should make a new one where the Simpson family
becomes friendly with the Flanders'. In the middle of the movie, they
should get into a fight, forcing the Simpson to move out of town. Then,
they come back, trying to get their house back, but it turns out, Ned
Flanders bought their property. Now it's war for the two families.

Why not? Just make it about Maggie getting kidnapped and have the family
go on a wild adventure to get her back.
Sincerely,
Your biggest "Simpsons" fan

why can't Mr. Burns be the major villain in the second film?!?! there's so
much to build on from that.

mr burns is always the villain im not sure people would want to watch the
usual villains trying to destroy the simpsons- might i stress- again and
fail.... again. they need something spunky so completely weird that
people will love it, something sooo........... un-simpson-like they
can be the villains for once

I have the perfect scenario! 2 months after the events of this movie,
Homer (on a reckless beer bash (like it normally is)) runs for President of
the United States and wins! He then learns fame isn't everything (and
neither is not bumping into anything) and misses his old life. Sure, it
isn't the most perfect scenario, but I don't see the Fox bastards coming up
with anything, now, do we?

the problem with the first was it didn't involve springfield enough it
needs a villian from springfield and bart and the school kids need to start
a rebellion of some sort.

Even if they were planing a second film it would take a hell of a long time
to make. It is very suprising that magie said sequel and yet they had no
plans almost to make another film.

What if the sink hole never actually left and the Simpsons (or a part of
Springfield) did end up in China and they had to find a way back home while
avoiding a vengeful Russ Cargill. I don't know how good that is for the
plot, however it may be ok as a side story type thing.

if russ cargill was back, the government would know that the dome was
destroyed, and they could just make another dome and a 5 second bomb for
the obvious success

I'd love to see a sequel. I've seen the movie itself over twenty times. I'm
a huge fan of the Simpson's, I watch it every night.
I thought
to myself at the end of the credits "Those weren't her first words,
her first words were 'Daddy'".
They have taken care of the
Global Warming thing, now its time to do something less serious. Reenact a
famous film, or something.
(Seeing sideshow Bob again, or some
other enemy would be the same as seeing as episode. I'd like to see a whole
new Simpson's adventure.)
I'm sure they will make a new one.
They waited, what was it? seventeen years? to make the first one. A new one
is probably in the making, we just don't know it.
