Sony Pictures Animation, Platinum Studios Team Up For Cartoon

Sony Pictures Animation and Platinum Studios announced that they will collaborate on an upcoming animated film.

Sony Pictures Animation has inked a deal with Platinum Studios, Inc. to develop an as-yet untitled animated feature film. announced Wednesday by Bob Osher, president of Sony Pictures Digital Productions and Hannah Minghella , president of production for Sony Pictures Animation.

According to the press release, Platinum Studios controls an international library of comics and graphic novel content with over 5,600 characters from various comic books – such as KISS 4K, a collaboration with painted 1970's rockers KISS – which they're trying to bring to feature film and television. Platinum's most controversial action was in 2006, when they bought DrunkDuck.com for an undisclosed sum.

This is the second collaboration between Sony and Platinum Studios CEO Scott Mitchell Rosenberg. The first was the billion dollar-earning live-action film franchise, Men In Black, one of the most successful comic-book-to-film adaptations of all time.

"I have known and respected Scott Rosenberg for many years as a great resource of characters, stories and ideas," said Bob Osher in the press release. "We're looking forward to working with him and Platinum Studios to develop a feature from their library of stories and characters."

"It is great to be working with Bob and Sony again," replied Rosenberg. "And Hannah has the perfect energy and creative tenacity to drive us into a fantastic feature world."

Platinum Studios' film and TV division has various other properties in development at other film studios, including Atlantis Rising at DreamWorks, with Kurtzman/Orci (Transformers) producing. They also have Cowboys and Aliens at Dreamworks, this time with Kurtzman/Orci partnering with Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment.

Platinum is also developing Unique at Walt Disney Pictures and Dead of Night with Hyde Park Entertainment. Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) is set to star in the latter, with Kevin Munroe

(2007's TMNT) in the director's chair. In addition to all that, Gale Anne Hurd's Valhalla Motion Pictures and Platinum Studios are currently co-developing two feature films based on the soon-to-be-published graphic novel Final Orbit and Top Cow's limited series The Magdalena.

Sony Pictures Animation: Open Season, Surf's Up

Sony Pictures Animation is best known for several CGI animated feature films: 2006's Open Season, 2007's Surf's Up,and the direct-to-DVD Open Season 2.

SPA currently has 3 other animated films – Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Hotel Transylvania and The Smurfs – also in their pipeline. The company recently announced a first-look deal with The Gotham Entertainment Group, which is best known for distributing Indian remakes of popular DC and Marvel titles such as Spider-Man, Tarzan and Batman.
