It's a little over two years before Toy Story 3 hits theatres, and already there's plenty of speculation about what happens to Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the gang.
There's been no shortage of drama around this latest entry in the CGI movie franchise, from Disney's attempt to create their own Toy Story 3 without creator John Lasseter and the Pixar gang (under their short-lived Circle 7 Animation imprint) to the news that Toy Story 2 co-director Lee Unkrich was taking over the reins for this installment.
Wall Street Journal Gets Toy Story 3 Plot Scoop
A Tuesday report in The Wall Street Journal, of all places, snagged a scoop on a possible plot for the flick, which was quickly reproduced by the super-spies at AICN and JoBlo.com.
According to Merissa Marr and Nick Wingfield at TWSJ, "In Pixar's coming movie Toy Story 3, Woody the cowboy (voiced by Tom Hanks) and his toy-box friends are dumped in a day-care center after their owner, Andy, leaves for college."
If this scoop is true (and The Wall Street Journal is pretty good about checking their facts), then this flick will continue the theme of abandonment that was briefly touched on in Toy Story 2. This synopsis, not surprisingly, has been tossed all over Cyberland, but the Mouse House has not confirmed whether or not this is real. Like all Interweb rumours, treat it with a truckload of salt.
However, the plot thickens with the news that there is a second Toy Story 3 synopsis, sitting at IMDb. Here's a second synopsis, more-than-slightly modified from what's on the IMDb site.
Possible Toy Story 3 Synopsis (SPOILER ALERT!)
"In this new adventure, Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) has encountered a malfunction and is being sent to Taiwan to be fixed. It appears that these malfunctions are occurring with other Buzz Lightyear toys all around the world. Woody, and a group of his friends, must somehow save Buzz from destruction."
However, a little more digging revealed that this was going to be the Circle 7 version of Toy Story 3, that was written by Jim Herzfeld. John Lasseter, when he took over as chief creative officer at Walt Disney Animation in May of 2006, gave Circle 7 and this script the old heave-ho. He then brought in acclaimed scriptwriter Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine) to help create a new Toy Story 3 script.
So, is the "Woody and the gang are dumped in a day care centre" plot what Arndt, Lasseter and Unkrich want for Toy Story 3?
Stay tuned for Disney's confirmation, or wait until June 18, 2010. That's when the flick flies into theatres.
